The Hispanic Dropout Mystery: A staggering 30% leave school, far more than blacks or whites. why?
After reading this article bu Susan Headden made me realize that i should take education more serious because is true that there are teenagers that will do anything to get educated but are not able to, this motivates me more to go forward with my education and represent the hispanics that are not able to go to school because of their poverty, or need to work to help their family. Most latinos are not able to attend school not because they dont want to or are "lazy" but because their parents can't afford to pay for school or need the help of their children to work to help support the family. When i go to ecuador, i see kids at the age of 10 working helping their father with the consturction work, and my grandma tells me that they would rather go to school instead of working but they have no other choice, thats why i should appreciate my education in the united states. The article explains that their are more hispanics that dropout then whites or black also because the language, latinos have trouble learning english. One of the solutions the article explained was when a student wants to droput the administators make the student sign a waiver saying that they "wont be able to survive in the 21st century" and give the students a "certifacte of dropping out", it made a student back out of dropping out, thats a bit harsh and funny to me but atleast it helps from preventing some students to drop out.

Positive Functions of the underserving Poor: Uses of the underclass in America
In this article by Herbert J. Gans is arguing that the nonpoor people complain that the people who are not as fortunate like them that they dont deserve help from the govenrment or that they are taking their jobs which makes hno sense to me because americans wont do the jobs immgrants/poor emplyees do, in fact should be thankful that immigrants are in the US because they often do the dirty/hard working jobs, and that they are a threat to society. Not everyone has that kind advantage being born in a wealthy family but raised in a poverty home. Herbert explains the reason the poor are always beng judged as underserving, is because of stereotype. The nonpoor judge the poor by what they see, and they are often called lazy, irresponsible. For example single mothers that are poor are willing to do everything possible to get a bit of money to buy her kids food, We dont know the story behind it but always the negative minds say she went against the norms for being an irrresponsible girl sleeping with a men before marriage and is on the street asking for money. i say instead of judging, feel sympathy and do something to help her with her kids, especially her children that have no fault. Hernert introduces five positive functions, microsocial, economic, normative-cultural, political, and macrosocial.

DEVIANCE
Being a deviant person is someone who breaks a social rule. Most of us tennagers including me breaks the common social rule which is underage drinking. we dont see no ham to it or a wrong at the moment, but we never think about the consequences that would take place after. Most deviance is not illegal, there just in the "wrong" group as explained in chapter 6. The unfairnes soceity brings is a person will be named deviance just by the way they are or look or their affects. In my understanding of deviance is the rules that you break not neccesarilly need to be illegal but social, breaking the rules on what people believe is "wrong" or not right. On my understanding everyone can be a devaint person once in their life wether intentionally or unintentionally.

Killing Us Sofly
Is a documentary by Jean Killbourne about advertisements and
the way it reflects on women body. Many years ago Jean was an advertiser for a
birth control called Ovulen-21 it has a picture of a women smiling and boxes
with pictures of chores women have to do every day of the week. Jean started
collecting adds from perfume, clothing. Jewelry companies and noticed that
there was something constantly showing and it was not right. There were skinny,
perfect face models, ideal images on how women have to be in order to be
beautiful. That motivated her to start her series “Killing us Softly 3” in
1987. Jean explains that advertisement are influencing women, teenagers even
young girls to have a perfect body such as being really thin and not have no
pimples, no imperfections on their face, no wrinkles, stretch lines, if a women
fails they have to feel ashamed and consider themselves not beautiful. That’s
why anorexia and bulimia exist on women especially teenagers.
Advertisements not only sell the products but also sell
values, images, concepts of love, normality and who women are and what women
should says Jean. In a advertisement on a magazine shows a women with no
imperfections but that’s not reality, is customized with the help of computers
retouching program getting rid of the imperfections. Soon the companies won’t
need models because it also creates a perfect face getting parts from different
women faces and putting them together. Women are judged of their body more than
men, in order to be perfect you need to have perfect breast no fat and have a
face like a young girl. Advertisements also show racism with black women that
are constantly dressed as animal prints. And also feminist because women are
commonly to have their hands over their mouth expressing that woman have no
say. Advertisements influence society in a lot of ways and effects woman self
esteem.
Tony Porter- A Call to Men
Anthony Porter was raised in Harlem,
Bronx and was taught from his father that he had to be a man that had to always
be strong, dominated, and courageous and never have NO pain, especially NO
FEAR!, says tony. Men never cry, are superior and women are inferior, women
always have to obey what the men say. This is all in the socialization of men
called the “Man box”. Tony has a family of two kids and a wife. Tony explained
when his daughter would go crying to him was normal but when his son came to
him crying, tony would get mad and tell him go to his room and come out when he
becomes a “men”. Later he would regret the way he talked to him and remembered
of his father.
Men are known to be strong, not shed
a tear not once because then he would jeopardized his masculinity. When tony
was 12 he had a friend named Johnny a cool doing drugs 16 year old boy. Jhonny
offered tony to have sex with a 16 year old girl that he raped a few minutes
earlier. Men had a disgusting mentality about women and it was all because of
that “Men box”. Tony lied he had sex with the girl who now is ill. Since that
day he valued himself and didn’t care much about the “Men box”. All men when
they feel superior of women they turn violent, rape, harass and mistreat women.
Those are the #1 health concern for women. Tony is encouraging men, fathers to
teach the younger boy that is okay to cry, show emotion, have girls as friends.
To know women and men are equal.
Relating both videos to chapter 5
Both videos
relate to chapter 5 because it talks about social life affects human beings.
There on section in chapter five that talks about the gender socialization.
Gender socialization is females and males that learn their traits and behaviors
and the role they suppose to have depending on their gender. In the chapter
says the “socialization is usually what “should” be done, not what “must” be
done.” Just like how the videos shows like tony was mentioning in “ A call to
men video men think they “have” to be strong with no emotion and dominant, and
in the video ”killing us softly” women think they “have’ to be think and
perfect in order to be beautiful and get attention from men, that’s what
society shows and expresses affecting humans self-esteem and mentality.
The role of
a men is usually to be aggressive, loud, tough and a girl quite, passive,
sensitive and nonathletic. If the gender were to b opposite of what they are
suppose to be they were called disturbing names such as for girl a “tomboy” and
guys a “sissies”. Guys were more judged about their attitude more than girls,
but girls are judged more by their body figure. Everywhere you go there will
always be rules and punishing every transgression with any kind of action
especially calling names.
The toys that represent the ways that
boy and girls are socialized. This dolls show how a biy and a girl could play together and play the rold of men and women. how "reality" suppose to be.
Social interaction
Having interaction in your life with society is important because you need to experience new things and meet new people in order to go forward in life. For example when you have a job you suppose to nteract with your co-workers mayb not talk about your personal life but greet have mini conversations. This shows in chapter 3 the importance of interacting in society. I may not be a person who often talks to people that ive never seen before but if that person talks to me i will respond back in a friendly way. you interact every step you take in life, such ass trainstation, job, school, companies, stores with out even noticing your interacting.

Culture
Theres many different types of culture and it comes from what people belive, where they come from, the way they dress traditionally, on what we eat. For example in my ecuadorian culture, my family gathers up 9 days before christmas. in those reunions we talk about how god is born day by day and at the end our parents ask us questions on the readings that is called "A Novena". Theres alot of traditions that my family does and it surprises me because it brings the family together and enjoy our culture ecuadorian. Each of the cultures have their own way on expressing where a person comes from.
